Sustainability
Living and working within the temperate rainforests of Western North Carolina and Oregon has shaped how I think about materials, process, and responsibility. These environments encourage a slower, more intentional approach to making, where long-term impact matters as much as the finished work.
Sustainability within my practice is not a trend or a label. It is an ongoing commitment to thoughtful material choices, low-impact studio methods, and partnerships that align with shared environmental values. This page outlines how those commitments are carried through the work, from material selection to distribution.
Materials & Studio Practices
I prioritize sustainable and eco-conscious materials throughout my practice. My work is created using bio-based epoxies and algae-derived urethanes as alternatives to traditional petroleum-based resins.
Bio-based epoxies are derived from renewable resources such as agricultural byproducts and reclaimed organic matter. Algae-based urethanes incorporate algae biomass, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining structural integrity.
These materials emit fewer volatile organic compounds and produce minimal off-gassing, resulting in little to no lingering odor once cured. This benefits both the studio environment and the spaces where the work ultimately lives.
Packaging follows the same principles. All shipping materials are fully recycled, with most containing 90 to 97 percent post-consumer content. I use minimal packaging and avoid unnecessary waste wherever possible.
Partnerships & Giving
Sustainability is a long-term practice that extends beyond the studio. I collaborate with organizations and partners whose work supports environmental responsibility, climate action, and conservation efforts.
Current affiliations include:
– 1% for the Planet
– Eco-Packaging Alliance
– Stripe Climate
A portion of all sales supports organizations working in reforestation, conservation, and environmental accountability, including:
– One Tree Planted
– MountainTrue
– The Good API
These partnerships help ensure that each piece contributes to a broader system of environmental care, extending into the specific material, process, and health-conscious decisions that shape how the work is made.
I’m always exploring ways to reduce my practice's environmental impact. If you work with sustainable suppliers or low-waste solutions that align with these values, I welcome thoughtful recommendations.
